How Secure Is Your Private Sphere?

Guarding Festive Times With Proactive Safety Measures

With David Perez, CEO and President of OMEGA International Group, Inc.

The holiday season, synonymous with festive joy and a sense of unity, unfortunately, also comes with increased risks and potential dangers. Whether you're hosting a cozy gathering at home, attending a dazzling event, or simply out shopping, personal security is paramount. David Perez, CEO and President of OMEGA International Group Inc., a private security group based in Beverly Hills, shares invaluable insights on maintaining safety, particularly emphasizing the discreet yet effective measures one can adopt.

One of the overlooked aspects of holiday security is the simple concept of maintaining a low profile. "During this time, people tend to be more relaxed, indulging in the festivities," David remarks. "However, wearing flashy jewelry or expensive accessories, even if they're just costume pieces, can make you an unintended target for criminals lurking about."

Instead, David suggests adopting a minimalist approach to personal adornments, especially when attending public events or navigating crowded places like shopping centers or restaurants. The key lies in blending in and not drawing unnecessary attention to oneself.

But what happens when the festive spirit calls for grandeur, like hosting a luxurious holiday party at home? "Believe it or not, most thefts occur during such intimate gatherings, not necessarily large parties," David reveals. "We trust the guests, often neglecting the fact that anyone can masquerade as a guest and take advantage of the situation."

In such scenarios, David recommends hiring professional security personnel, even for smaller events. "Having a security door person is invaluable. They ensure only invited guests gain entry and monitor any suspicious activity, allowing you to enjoy your event worry-free," he explains. The presence of a trained professional subtly reinforces the security atmosphere without dampening the festive mood.

Moreover, the concept of personal security extends beyond physical presence.

David highlights the spike in online scams and deceptive communications during the holidays. He firmly advises, "Never respond to unsolicited emails or messages. These could be gateways for scammers." He also cautions against the emerging trend of AIgenerated voice phishing, where criminals replicate a known voice to trick individuals into transferring money or divulging sensitive information, especially during travel.

Scammers use technology for "virtual kidnappings," exploiting the fact that travelers can't be reached during flights.

"Criminals know you're going to be on a four or five hour flight... So what happens is you get on a flight, 99% of the time, none of us can make phone calls… they'll call your family, say that you've been kidnapped and have them link money to this direct wire account. And if they don't get the money in two hours, they're going to harm you."

This scam relies on communication blackouts during flights. "Criminals, knowing that you can't get ahold of a person because they're on a flight. That's a big scam that's been going on for a couple years," David adds.

In light of these insights, it's clear that personal security during the holidays transcends being vigilant about one's surroundings. It's also about preventive action and establishing safety nets. Set safety protocols with loved ones when traveling, including check-ins and action plans for unexpected silence. If a distressing call comes, stay calm, and attempt all avenues to contact the alleged victim.

David reiterates the essence of enjoying the holiday season without unnecessary stress. "The goal is to celebrate and create memories with loved ones. Taking these precautionary steps ensures peace of mind and allows everyone to focus on what truly matters during these times."
